Some of the Free Stuff I've Found on the Side of the Road
This is a different type of video for me. A friend suggested that I make a video of some of my finds from the side of the road. I do a lot of driving and I often see "Free" signs and bulk clean up piles. If I see something good, I always stop. I've furnished most of my house with stuff from the side of the road ... lamps, lounges, TVs, stereo equipment, paintings, etc. If something is better than I currently have, I upgrade. If I know someone needs something, I'll grab it for them. Most of the stuff I find goes to my favourite local charity. It's not as if all this stuff's been found within a month or a year ... it's been the last 5 or 6 years, at least. All my garden equipment was free ... two Honda 4 stroke line trimmers, a Victa mower that was only a year old when found, and a high-end Japanese leaf blower. I've found lots of modern tools, but the stuff I'm most interested in is old, vintage, or different "Man Cave" stuff such as old tools with nice rusted patina, old signs and crates, and that sort of thing. I don't sell much. The Audio Physic speakers were given to my brother. That was probably the best find to date. Nice things, but I'm not an audiophile. I'm not sure what kind of reception this video will get. I'll keep it up for a while, but I don't think it's the sort of thing I want to repeat. Two of my cars were purchased from the sale of two of my finds. For the BG Astina, I sold a coffee machine a few days before for the same amount, $600. My half share of the NA MX5 was financed by selling a Weber BBQ I found for $250. Crazy how you can find "free" cars on the side of the road!

Mazda BG 323 Astina - Cheap at $600, But Too Good to be a Parts Car

This Astina was advertised as a "Donor car" that's "good for work on a property." When I got to see it, despite being just a little rough around the edges, I knew it was too good to be parted out. A one owner car, it only has 146,000 kilometres on the clock after 30 years. It was advertised for $600 Australian dollars, and that's exactly what I paid. It starts first go, is smooth and comfortabl...

This is part 2 of the "Low Coolant Warning Light" problem and fix on my AU3 XR8 ute. The first video ends with the warning light still being a problem, but absolute certainty that the sensor, float and wiring were not the culprit. This is a really basic video that does not assume you have any mechanical background. I certainly don't. There are professional tools you can use to do the job, but I used what I had readily available. You'll see that I failed to fix the warning light issue, but I "successfully" installed a working sensor. As it turns out, the problem was more than a sensor with a cracked float full of coolant....

    the easiest way to tell is the exhaust system, if it has a catalytic converter then its an unleaded engine, if it does not then leaded engine. XF with 3.3L in S-Pac trim with no air con and power steering? that would be a very rare combo. Nice Falcon, if you still have it please look after it.

      Hi. No, factory produced that way. Don’t quote me on this, but I think later on in the production run all S Pac cars had the larger engine. This is the very last of the first series … the next month they switched to a Series II with the unleaded engine … maybe it happened around this time. Again, it’s a good question … I’ll have to do some research to confirm. Cheers

    I have the sedan with the same mechanicals as yours and we've had it since new (1990). It's done 303 K with no major repairs. Along with the first 323 ('77) and the first front drive 323 ('80) yours is in my view the best of the 323 series. I've also owned a '90 SP which was not as good as the basic SOHC (yours). Your front end may have been replaced as in mid '91 Mazda removed the Mazda badge from the grill (a mistake in my view) and went logo only but I see yours has both. Hang on to your car. Fully imported Japanese cars of that era were brilliant. The Pulsar released in '91 were also great. Any questions feel free to ask.

    This is the first place I've seen that someone thought there were 3 generations of Brumby. Been into Subarus since the early 90s when I bought an 85 L series (or what most people call the Gen 3 Leone) sedan. That 90 is the same as the 84, everything would swap over and bolt on (and vice versa). That 4 headlight front was available on an 83 Touring wagon, Coupe, & Sedan (ie the top, more luxurious spec). Be curious to learn why you think the 89-94 Brumby is a Gen 3?

    • @DPOSFS
      @DPOSFS 7 місяців тому

      Thanks for your comment. The description was updated about a year ago to reflect the comment of another person about the availability of the quad lights. There’s nothing in the paperwork or designation by Subaru that I have seen to distinguish these as separate models, so you’re right there. The round headlight body shape vs the other two is easy to distinguish as different enough to say it’s a different series of the same platform/model. You could get the quad lights earlier than the general move to that shape, but you would have had to have optioned the Sports model / Taga Top, so here I’m generally talking about the standard model. I know I’m saying stuff of which you are already aware, but I’ll say it because it’s part of my reasoning, and I’d like to answer your question. In late 1989 the standard model moved to the quad light configuration and after this time you could no longer get the twin headlight arrangement. In different markets there were different offerings. I lived in Detroit in the USA for 10 years and occasionally I saw a BRAT - these were always the quad light look. I think you’re right to say the differences between the twin and quad light Brumbys might be too small to warrant the designation of a new model, especially as there were other running changes along the way. But as this is an easily identifiable change to the look of the “face” of the car, and as it signifies the point in time when you could no longer get the twin headlight model, I’m using this as the marker for a new series (quad light) of the same model. In other words, I’m using “series” and “model” interchangeably and loosely to identify the standard look available in Australia. Taking a Holden example, the VR and VS Holden Commodores, despite modest differences, were known as different models, but they could have easily been seen as being *basically* the same car, just Series I and Series II iterations. Thanks for the question. It was good for me to think about it.

      @@DPOSFS Thanks for the reply. Very well considered. I think the Americans tend to be the ones who use the generations more than Aussies because of the way they didn't call them "MY" or "L series". I know in the groups/forums I've been in, lots of people are advised to say they've got an 83 or 84 model so source parts otherwise the parts interpreters tended to get confused with the squarer L series. And I agreed completely with the VR vs VS thing :p

      @DPOSFS 9 місяців тому

      No, I’m not sure where you can find one as these 323F cars are becoming rarer to see on the roads. I know the double DIN radios for the NA Miata (MX5 here) are really hard to find. I don’t know if the European frequencies are different and if the Australian delivered radios here will work over there. I know the Japanese (JDM) Eunos Roadster radios don’t work in Australia - different frequencies. That’s the reason my Roadster doesn’t have the original double DIN radio. You could search online for Australian wreckers who are parting out this car. They come up from time to time. They are known as the Mazda BG 323 Astina here. Year = part way into 1989 until part way into 1994. Good luck with your search.

      Hi. Thanks. No problems with it at all, but I’ve only done about 900 kilometres in it. It’s a fun thing to drive. The new front Monroe struts have made it a good car for speed humps and bumps. I’m going to put new KYB oil filled struts on the rear. They were very, very cheap, and as I have an oil leak from the right rear shock, it’s time to do it. The KYB Premium shocks were only $2.90 each or 1.72 Euro (633143 and 633144). For that price, they were virtually giving them away.

      Hi. Are you in Australia? Apparently there’s no common body panels/glass with the sedan of the same model, so you’ll have a smaller pool of spare parts cars from which to choose. The one part I find really hard to find is the A pillar exterior trim. They break and they don’t sell new ones. I need at least two. There’s a couple of people overseas who make “backyard made” replacements. I bought a donor parts car last week but it’s much too good to part out so now I have two Astinas. I agree, they are getting rarer on the roads and rarer for parts, although mechanically I think parts are easy enough to source. Good luck.

      @@Grooby__ Well done and congrats on your buy. My mechanic couldn’t believe both of my cars are 30 years old. He raved about the comfort and handling after doing the struts, even to say it drives like a new car. I agree! I’ll be selling my green one in about 6-9 months time. Both are great cars, but it doesn’t make sense for me to have two of the same model. I’ll drive the white Astina on full reg until June and then convert it to Historic Rego so I can afford to bring my AU XR8 back on the road. Anyhow, the sticker on the inside of the door (driver’s, I think) has some useful info. Your car would be a BG2 given the date (series 2 BG Astina), and this will appear as a number 2 on the VIN. The owner’s manual should have the engine number listed, and if you don’t have that, the rego papers should have it. I haven’t looked for it stamped on the engine block. If you want to see mine and you’re in Sydney, let me know.

      Thanks for watching. We were VERY lucky to buy this one for $500 Australian dollars in May 2019. It was crazy cheap, so much so that I thought I was scammed as I paid before picking it up in case I lost it to someone else or the owner realised its true value. Hopefully a good one comes up for you. They are fun, well-balanced things.

    Surprised the rear “kidney-buster “ seats not mentioned, probably only for the US market. I had a 1987, last of the breed without the seats. Had to pay for truck registration. Bought it new, with flip up,sunroofs, 5 speed.Dark blue in color. My wife drove a 1984, silver in color with the sunroofs and also auto.trans. When we drove the two of them together, we called our self’s, “The Brat Patrol”! Had a cap installed on the ‘87. Subaru had the seats installed for the US market to beat a tariff, and they could be registered as a car. Also, the early 1980s models had a revolving center lamp in the grille as an option on the Brat as well as the other models. Never knew they were called “Brumbys”. Great collection, the selector for 4wd seemed strange in the early one. Thanks! Bill

      Cheers Bill. Yep, only for the US market. They looked good, though, even if they were uncomfortable unsafe hahaha. There were quite a few subtle differences in the different markets. we didn't have the "Third Eye," or the rear facing seats, and the dashes were quite different. I didn't see too many when I was living in Michigan, but I reckon the salt must have got them early.

      G'day. I will keep it for a good while as it doesn't really owe me much and it's a fun thing to drive. I don't have undercover parking for it unfortunately, so i'll have to see how it stands up to the weather. I don't have enough footage for a second video. I'm taking it for a drive to Bathurst next month, so maybe I can put something together then. Cheers for watching.
